ABOUT ABOUT

In the classic Daoist text, Zhuangzi, we encounter vignettes about a variety of artisans and people with magnificent and unusual skills. Within these stories are suggestions that their rare abilities are rooted in Daoist contemplative and meditative practices. In this presentation I review the key texts of the classical Daoist tradition, identify some of its distinctive meditative practices, and highlight the effects that such practices are claimed to have on artistic and craft production. Finally, I will note some parallels between the Zhuangzi’s representation of artisans and contemporary psychological research on skillful knowing and effortless action.
