ABOUT ABOUT

“Mindfulness and Self-Compassion”

Kim Weiner, Ph.D
Associate Professor, Clinical Psychologist
Indiana University of Pennsylvania

In current research and literature, mindfulness as a way to cultivate compassion and, in particular, self-compassion is demonstrating to be significantly related to psychological wellbeing. This talk will give an overview of work by  Paul Gilbert on  CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy)  and Kristen Neff’s theoretical and empirical work demonstrating the power of self compassion and psychological wellbeing. The presentation will review Gilbert’s theory, which draws from neuroscience, evolutionary psychology and Buddhism, and Neff’s work which draws from social psychology and developmental theory to present ways self-compassion gives rise to affiliative emotions, such as self-care,self- soothing, and compassion for others.

A good portion of this presentation will allow time for participants to have the opportunity to practice several mindful self-compassion meditations/exercises
