A healthy lifestyle is the first line of defense against chronic disease. In this four-hour program, the primary foundations of healthy lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and sleep, will be unpacked into practical information for everyone’s use. Through education and improved lifestyle choices, individuals can manage health outcomes and prevent, treat or even reverse chronic conditions.

Continuing education credit pending for registered dieticians (RD), and community health educators (CHES). 

Lunch is included.

EXERCISE:

The prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Obesity are increasing at an alarming rate. One of the contributing factors in the epidemic, is lack of appropriate physical activity. This presentation will discuss the morbidity and mortality associated with physical inactivity and lifestyle disease. Further, the joint initiative of the American Medical Association and American College of Sports Medicine, Exercise is Medicine, will be explained. In addition, specific exercise prescription for individuals with lifestyle diseases will be discussed.

NUTRITION:

This presentation will provide an overview of the latest practical strategies for incorporating
evidence based nutritional recommendations for promoting health and decreasing risk for metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Ways to evaluate the latest nutrition research, utilizing the new food label for making healthier choices, and ways to apply current nutritional recommendations including pre and probiotics and anti-inflammatory diet as part of healthy lifestyle will be presented.

SLEEP:

Many adults in the U.S. report sleep problems such as insufficient sleep, difficulty falling asleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness. There are multiple causes of sleep problems including clinical sleep disorders and other health issues, but also poor sleep hygiene and lifestyle choices. Recent research has highlighted the negative consequences of sleep loss for health, safety and performance. This lecture will provide an introduction to the biological systems underlying sleep and
circadian rhythms and a discussion of the relationship between sleep and health.
